I’m supper happy with the Fast Forward Supercharger’s performance. The driving experience before I put on the supercharger, I needed to hit high RPMs for normal traffic driving. With the supercharger there is huge torque improvement and it feels like mid-range shifting is how the car drives best. Spirited driving in the canyons is another level of excitement; I can get out of the turns just as fast as any other Miata now.

Here’s some background. I first purchased my 2001 about 2 years ago with 57K miles on it. Nearing the 60K maintenance window, I replaced the timing belt, water pump, radiator, suspension & more to get the car setup for safe spirited driving. I drive the car for a few months stock and thoroughly enjoyed driving with the top down.

I took my time and enjoyed installing the supercharger kit. The installation wasn’t difficult aside from mounting the intake manifold. Dropping the starter made installing the intake manifold easier. (Pat is re-casting the intake manifold to simplify installation). The kit had everything and support from Tom and Pat has been world class excellent!

FFS kit: Purchased in 2005 as one of the original 25 prototype MP62 Coldside kits offered through a joint venture with Tom Van Dan Elzen, the founder of FFS and BRP / Stage One Tuning. When BRP folded FFS was born.

Miles on the FFS kit? 110k on the kit, 145K miles on the car

My story: When I was a kid growing up in the 70s, my dad owned a 75 TR6 in British Racing Green with a matching hardtop. I loved that car and vowed one day to have my own little two seat convertible. When Mazda released the Miata I knew it was only a matter of time. I found a low mileage 99 Miata in 2001 as a lease turn in and have been hooked on Miatas ever since. I loved the handling of the car but was always a little disappointed that it didn’t have a bit more power. In 2004 when I started researching how to add power using forced induction there were two main options: turbo kits or the mp45 supercharger or a larger mp62 hotside supercharger that recommended using an intercooler. In 2005 there was some chatter on Miata Net about a new coldside kit being developed that eliminated the need for an intercooler and provided immediate throttle response with approximately 170 – 190 rwhp. This new kit only required removing old parts and installing the new parts, no real modifications required such as cutting, drilling or welding and it only added about 19lbs of additional weight to the car. Once they released 25 kits for purchase to the public I pulled the trigger.

I was a very inexperienced shade tree mechanic but the process didn’t intimidate me. The kit came in two boxes, the electronics, most of the hardware, hoses and directions came from BRP; a separate box with the supercharger arrived from a company called “Knack Toys”, Tom’s company before starting FFS. Install took me about a month, spending a few hours each weekend from the day after Thanksgiving and finally turned the key for the first time on Jan 1 2006. The kit really follows Tom’s FFS Coldside motto “Install, Turn Key and Enjoy”.

Upgrades for the S/C were only an aftermarket aluminum radiator, boost, oil temp and AFR gauges, a new fuel filter and replaced the open differential with a factory LSD. I planned to upgrade the clutch and flywheel when the OEM failed but that lasted until last summer, I replaced it with another factory Mazda clutch hoping to get another 20+ years out of it. I run 93 Octane all year from Top Tier fuel stations, the fuel tank is just over 12 gallons so the additional cost of higher octane is minimal but should be a necessity for forced induction systems.

I really like the linear power delivery of the FFS kit. It feels like a larger engine and what the Miata should have had from the factory. It has been very reliable for my 20+ years of having it installed but I have resisted the urge to chase down more power by adding complexity. I still run the original 20 year old Jackson Racing Power Card piggy back to the stock ECU, no ECool or the other FFS fuel or timing card as my pulley ratio is 65/90 for 6lbs of boost. I have had the S/C nose bearings replaced twice when they started making noise where replacing the fluid and coupler didn’t fix the issue. Other than routine maintenance for a 26 year old car, the kit itself has been flawless.

How has the experience changed since installing your kit? The car feels perfect, every time I think it’s time to buy a faster, newer car I take the Miata out for a 30 minute drive and come back knowing I’ll never get rid of it. The only thing I plan next is to eventually convert it to the TVS900 as the MP62 parts and support are getting harder to find. For engine management I may move up to a standalone ECU so I can have a more efficient blower with a goal of 190 rwhp and still maintain reliability.

I also have the new FFS Cold Air Intake install that replaced the snorkel tube over the top of the valve cover. Once I figure where to relocate my oil filter relocation kit I’ll update this review with additional pics of the CAI installed. The original air intake was located underneath the blower next to the alternator. Later they added the snorkel and cold air box to the driver’s side headlight similar to the stock intake. The new CAI moves the intake back to the passenger side but up behind the passenger headlight instead of behind the alternator. That snorkel is the only thing I’ve ever disliked about the kit. While functional it looks silly and distracts from a very well put together kit.

I can’t recommend this kit enough for anyone who wants to increase the power of their Miata while maintaining stock reliability and drivability of their Miata. Pat Cowan, the new owner has been very receptive to my questions about kit compatibility with his new parts on old kits like mine. I’m still happy to be an active FFS customer for 20+ years, they still make things I can use!

Since owning the mp62 ffs kit ive had nothing but great service from Tom and, as everyone will tell you, he had excellent customer service and cared about his customers, I also have spoken to Pat a few times as of recently and he definitely is carrying the same care for his customers. I can’t recommend this kit more. It far exceeded my expectations. The car in question was just recently re tuned with the 12psi pulley set up and I made 200whp and 450nm of torque on 98 pump fuel.

For anyone thinking about buying the FFS kit, all I can say is DO IT, they make is so simple to install and the instructions Tom wrote are very in depth making it so anyone can install this kit, you 100% will not regret it. For those outside of the state such as my self, DO IT HAHA, we need more of these kits around the world showing people just how good this kit actually is.

I found my Miata for sale online and drove three states over to purchase it and road trip it home. It had everything I wanted: My ideal color/trim, a detailed service history, and desirable aftermarket accessories. I initially felt hesitant about the supercharger kit that was installed on the car, as I was not familiar with power mods for Miatas at the time, but upon doing some diligent research online on FFS and their business and products, I felt confident enough to take the leap. For a kit that (in December of 2025) is about 20 years old, I am astonished by how flawlessly it still operates. I recently refreshed it with new gear oil and an accessory belt, and I am sure it will continue to add exciting pep to my Miata for the next 20 years. My only (VERY small!) issue that I have had with my FFS kit thus far was a worn SC-to-intake-manifold support bracket that rattled around a bit because its fittings had simply been subject to the effects of age; I don't fault FFS for this at all, especially considering that my kit is a V1 and almost 20 years old! The only reason I want to mention this is because of the amazing customer support that Patrick Cowan offered me while he helped me determine the source of the rattle and purchase a revised version of the bracket that is even stronger than the old one. The fact that FFS is willing and able to support their earlier supercharger products is a testament to me of their engineering and reputation as a company. It is incredibly important to me that a product in which I invest considerable time and money in to is supported long after its original purchase.

How has the experience changed since installing your kit? Feel free to go into any level of detail you like about your build.

While I wasn't able to drive my Miata before its supercharger was installed, I have driven stock NA6, NB1 and NB2 Miatas. I believe that the driving experiences of these cars are still great comparisons for what it's like to drive with and without an FFS kit. According to the dyno sheet (from 2009) that the previous owner gave me when I bought the car, my FFS kit allows my car to make 173 HP at ~6,800rpm. Compared to other Miatas, my FFS kit makes my Miata feel just a civilized as a stock Miata when cruising around casually. However, when I really give it the beans and rev the car above ~4k RPM, the SC gives me a predictable and exciting surge of power that you just don't feel in a stock NB2; I love watching my Vac/Boost gauge climb up steadily in those higher RPMs. While the horsepower increase over a stock, naturally aspirated Miata is moderate, it is still more than enough to give a Miata that little extra something when you want it. While turbo kits are certainly capable of incredible horsepower gains, I preferer the (closer to) naturally aspirated feel of a supercharger, which my kit seems to nail just right.

Any advice you would like to share for anyone considering purchasing an FFS kit for their Miata?

Combine an SC kit with the cheapest All-Season tires you can find and you'll have a BLAST!

I purchased my supercharger kit last year for my 1999 NB. I have put several thousand miles on since installing the kit. I have had zero issues with it. I installed a boost gage when I finished putting it together (I highly recommend it) to see what kind of boost I was actually getting and where it came in. As advertised, it pulls 10 pounds under full throttle and around 5 pounds in the mid-range. The performance and driveability is excellent. Power when you need it without the lag of a turbocharger. No changes in idle or low speed performance. Really the best of all worlds. No check engine light or temp changes (I do have an aftermarket radiator).

Installation is pretty straightforward, just take your time and pay attention to details. The video is very important to watch and understand thoroughly. Took me a few weeks to complete, but I am 70 years old and I didn't spend more than 4 hours at a time working on it. The kit is very complete and can be installed with everything thing provided, but it is a good time to review any other items like oil leaks (valve cover gasket in my case) or new PCV valve you might need. On initial startup, my car just fired up as always, no additional adjustments needed! I have never installed a performance upgrade that just worked out of the box!

Tech support was excellent (thanks Pat!) and was answered all my questions.

I can recommend this upgrade highly if you want good power from your Miata without tearing the engine apart and changing the daily characteristics. It is also California smog legal, which is a huge part of the appeal for those of us stuck in the red tape of our state.

Frequently Asked Questions

What power should I expect?

~190–200 wheel horsepower on 91-octane fuel on a Dynojet with a manual transmission. Automatic cars generally show 10–20 fewer wheel horsepower.

Do I need a professional installer?

No. An experienced DIY installer can complete the job with basic automotive hand tools. Professional installation is recommended but is not required for warranty coverage when the kit is installed correctly.

Will I keep power steering and air conditioning?

Yes. The standard kit is compatible with factory power steering and air conditioning.

What is the CARB status for my year?

1990–2003 applications are CARB approved under Executive Order D-617-2 in the listed configuration. The 2004–2005 applications are not covered by that Executive Order.

What if I need help during installation?

FFS provides direct phone and email support during installation. Complete written and video instructions are also included.

What octane gasoline is required?

Use a minimum of 91 octane as measured by the R+M/2 method used in the United States. Higher octane is also acceptable.

Do I need to purchase special spark plugs?

No. The kit includes the correct colder-range spark plugs for the selected model year and power level.

Will I need to replace my radiator?

The stock radiator is sufficient for most cars as long as it is in good condition. Upgrading the radiator is recommended for very hot climates and for track use.

What condition should the car be in before installation?

The kit works on a stock Miata in good condition. The fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition wires, coil pack, CAS on NA Miatas, radiator, thermostat, and all coolant hoses should be in great condition and not too old.

Do I need a larger fuel pump?

If the stock fuel pump was replaced recently, it should be fine for the standard kit. If the pump is older, install a new stock pump or upgrade to a Walbro 190HP or similar pump.

How difficult is the engine-management wiring?

The engine-management cards come prewired to a plug-in harness specific to the selected model year. The E-Cool™ connection is also plug-and-play.

Do I need special gauges?

No aftermarket gauges are required. We recommend installing a Wideband O2 Gauge (WBO2) to monitor the Air/Fuel Ratio (AFR). A boost gauge is optional, but nice to have.

Will I need special tools?

Normal automotive hand tools are sufficient. The kit includes the specialty low-profile wrench used for serpentine-belt installation.

Do I need a new header or exhaust?

A header and high flow exhaust system improve horsepower and torque by reducing backpressure on the engine. The FFS kit works with a stock exhaust and stock header, but they are restrictive and leave some power on the table. A clogged or restrictive stock catalytic converter is the most common restriction found when running the stock exhaust.

Will the kit fit a right-hand-drive Miata?

Yes. Select the right-hand-drive option when configuring the kit.

What is the warranty?

All FFS supercharger kits include a 1-year warranty. Professional installation is recommended but is not required to maintain warranty coverage when the kit is installed correctly.

Is a 1.6L Miata kit available?

Not yet. FFS is working on the next-generation 1.6L system using our 1992 Sunburst Miata. No release date has been announced.

Is the engine management already tuned?

Yes. The plug-and-play engine-management system is configured and pre-tuned for the model year and Standard Kit configuration selected with the order.

What maintenance does the supercharger system require?

Replace the serpentine belt every 50,000 miles and the supercharger oil every 100,000 miles. Both are available from FFS.

What is the Standard Kit pulley ratio?

All Standard Kits ship with a 115mm crank pulley and a 65mm TVS900 pulley. This combination produces 10 psi boost.

Does the kit include a cold-air intake and filter?

Yes. The Standard Kit includes the correct FFS cold-air intake, aluminum air box, and High Flow K&N Air Filter for the selected application.

How does E-Cool™ differ from an intercooler?

E-Cool™ adds fuel ahead of the supercharger for both the additional fuel capacity and evaporative charge cooling. It is integrated with the FFS engine-management system and is not a conventional air-to-air or water-to-air intercooler.

What fuel should I use for track driving?

FFS strongly recommends running 100-octane race fuel when operating the car on a track.
